GIRLS’ DIVISION III
El Modena (19-7-2) vs. West Hills Chaminade (22-3-3), Cerritos Gahr HS, 8 p.m.
El Modena won the Division II title last season but almost nobody expected another run for a title this season. El Modena was not challenged in its first three playoff games, which it won by a combined score of 20-2. Top-seeded North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, however, pushed El Modena into overtime before the Vanguards escaped with a 2-1 victory. El Modena is led by midfielder Jill Pearson, the sister of the Vanguard coach and a first-team Division II selection last season. Chaminade lost in the Division II wild-card round last season. The Eagles tied Harvard-Westlake for the Mission League title this season and are seeded third in the tournament. Chaminade is led by midfielders Lia Cummins (eight goals, 10 assists) and Amy Watts (11 goals) and by forwards Kerrie Clavadetscher (19 goals, eight assists) and Liz Buhn (13 goals, nine assists). Jen Taylor anchors the defense and goalkeeper Kim Nelli has 18 shutouts.
