Periodically, the U.S. Interior Department adds to its list of National Historic Landmarks, which now number 2,210. Such landmarks are eligible for special plaques and preservation help. Some of this month’s additions, with reasons for their citations:
MT. RAINIER NATIONAL PARK
Mt. Rainier, Wash.
A model of 1920s national park planning.

Designed by the National Parks Service. A model of 1920s American town planning.

HAYMARKET MARTYRS’ MONUMENT
Forest-Home/Walden Cemetery, Forest Park, Ill.
Commemorates 1886 labor rally and four executed leaders of the struggle to achieve the eight-hour workday.

JOHN P. PARKER HOUSE
Ripley, Ohio
A former slave who rescued escaped slaves; lived at site 1853-1900.

PHILIP JOHNSON’S GLASS HOUSE
New Canaan, Conn.
Built in 1949, with later additions. A masterwork of international style.

GREENBELT HISTORIC DISTRICT
Greenbelt, Md.
Built 1943-46. The first government-sponsored planned community based on “garden city” principles.
