1 Dead, 9 Injured as Minivan Overturns

A Buena Park man was killed and nine people were injured Saturday afternoon when the minivan they were riding in veered off the Golden State Freeway and overturned, authorities said Sunday.

Nicanor Guillem, 73, was fatally injured when the van’s driver lost control of the northbound vehicle and crashed about 4 p.m. near California 138, authorities said.

Officer Ken Lane of the California Highway Patrol said Guillem was among several passengers who were thrown from the van after it struck a center divider, crossed over several lanes, skidded on a dirt median strip and overturned. The survivors were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, but their conditions were unavailable Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Lane said the accident appeared to have occurred after one of the passengers told the driver that the van’s left rear tire was losing air. The driver probably lost control when he leaned over to lower the volume on the radio, Lane said.

No further details were available, including whether the driver faces charges. The case remained under investigation by the CHP’s Newhall Division.
