TODAY’S GAME
ANGELS’ SHIGETOSHI HASEGAWA (1-1, 6.43 ERA) vs. BREWERS’ CAL ELDRED (3-3, 4.72 ERA)
* Update--The Brewers have been without their closer, shortstop and second baseman for much of the season but have still managed to stay at or near the top of the Central Division. And now they’re starting to recover from injuries. Second baseman Fernando Vina (broken ankle) isn’t expected back until June, but shortstop Jose Valentin, who missed three weeks because of a broken finger, returned this week, as did closer Mike Fetters, who pitched Monday for the first time since straining his left hamstring in spring training. Aging right-hander Doug Jones filled in admirably, saving six games in six opportunities. Milwaukee has been led offensively by John Jaha, who is hitting .265, with seven homers and 19 RBIs, and Dave Nilsson, who is hitting .314, with four homers and 16 RBIs. Hasegawa, the Angel’s Japanese right-hander, is coming off his best game of the season, a 5 2/3-inning, six-hit, two-run performance against Chicago on Sunday.
* Saturday, 11 a.m.--Jason Dickson (5-1, 3.13) vs. Scott Karl (1-5, 5.45).
* Sunday, 11 a.m.--Chuck Finley (0-2, 5.79) vs. Ben McDonald (3-2, 4.53).
