Handle With Care: Mail Carriers to Help With Food Banks’ Drive
- Share via
Mail carriers today will collect nonperishable food donations from homes throughout Orange County as part of their drive to “stamp out” hunger.
Residents are asked to place food, diapers and other unused sundries near their mail boxes so postal employees can pick them up during regular delivery times. Collections will go to local food banks.
“This is the one day of the year when letter carriers don’t mind having a heavy load when they return to their postal stations,” Vincent R. Sombrotto, president of the National Assn. of Letter Carriers, said in a prepared statement.
The nationwide food drive, sponsored by the association, is in its fourth year and will cover more than 10,000 cities. Last year, 45 million pounds--10,000 pounds from Orange County--of food were collected.
Residents who miss the mail carriers can bring donations to any local post office, said Ray Galvin, an event organizer stationed in Santa Ana.
