Clash at .500 After Beating MetroStars

Lawrence Lozzano scored his first goal of the season as the San Jose Clash defeated the New York-New Jersey MetroStars, 1-0, Friday in front of 14,742 at East Rutherford, N.J.

Lozzano took a pass from Dominic Kinnear, and was at the top of the box with a clear path to the goal, when MetroStars defender Joao Luiz fell trying to stop him.

He then beat goalkeeper Tony Meola in the 47th minute with a shot to the upper left corner, ending Meola’s 222-minute scoreless streak.

The MetroStars (3-5) were awarded a penalty kick in the 69th minute but Roberto Donadoni rolled the kick wide right.

The Clash (4-4) victory was also the first game played on the new grass at Giants Stadium.

Columbus 2, New England 0--Marcelo Carrera scored his first goal of the season to help the Crew defeat the Revolution (4-3) at Foxboro, Mass., in front of 10,732.

Robert Warzycha’s corner kick set up the game’s first goal. Brian McBride outleaped Revolution defender Alexi Lalas for the ball, and Carrera deflected his header into the net in the sixth minute.

Jorge Salcedo made it 2-0 for Columbus (5-2) in the 68th minute with assists from McBride and Doctor Khumalo.
