Fullerton Hammers Gauchos

Mike Lamb had four hits and five runs batted in and Brian Tokarse pitched six shutout innings Saturday night to lead host Cal State Fullerton to a 17-0 rout of UC Santa Barbara in Big West Conference baseball.

The Titans got 20 hits off of three Gaucho pitchers, including five doubles and a home run. Former Sonora standout Ryan Owens hit two doubles and Mike Wright got his third home run of the season.

Fullerton improved to 33-21-1, 20-9 in conference; UCSB fell to 26-27, 15-14.

Tokarse (10-1), who gave up only two hits, struck out the side in the top of the first and finished the night with 10 strikeouts.

The teams complete regular-season play at 1 p.m. today at Titan Field.

The Titans’ draw for the Big West tournament is set. Pacific will be the second-place team in the North Division and will play Fullerton, the second-place team in the South, at 7 p.m. Thursday at Titan Field.

In another Big West game:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 2, Long Beach State 1--Luther Salinas (4-3) scattered four hits over six innings and Kevin Mohr and Chad Snowden pitched three innings of hitless relief to lead Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to its second consecutive victory over Long Beach State.

The 49ers (34-21, 22-7), who already have clinched the Southern Division, took a 1-0 lead on Keith Cowley’s sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

The Mustangs (35-19, 13-15) tied the score in the fifth and took the lead on Boyd Dodder’s sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Marcus Jones (9-6) went the distance for Long Beach, giving up six hits, striking out four and walking two.

The 49ers complete the regular season with their series finale against the Mustangs at 1 p.m. today at Blair Field.

At the GSAC and NAIA Far West Tennis Championships:

Xie loses--Second-seeded Serrena Xie of Southern California College lost in singles, 7-5, 6-4, to top-seeded Yael Tobi of U.S. International in the women’s singles championship match.
