Jocelyn Forest, a junior right-hander for Santa Maria Righetti, pitched a one-hitter and struck out 14 to dismantle Mater Dei, 1-0, in the fifth-place game of the Thousand Oaks tournament at Thousand Oaks Community Park.
“I’d seen Mater Dei [play] and they’re a good-hitting team,” Righetti Coach Rich Cornejo said. “But they haven’t faced Jocelyn before.”
Forest (27-2), who broke Heather Compton’s school record for most wins in a season with the victory Saturday, issued a walk to Kelsey Kollen in the first and Marissa Young in the second and then settled into a groove, retiring the next 14 batters in order after Young’s walk.
“I have nothing but good things to say about [Forest],” Mater Dei Coach Doug Myers said. “Great pitching takes care of good hitting.”
Kendra Meano broke up Forest’s no-hit bid with two out in the sixth on a bloop single to left. Kollen reached base on a fielding error, which enabled Meano to advance to third. But Forest struck out Monica Lucatero on a riseball out of the strike zone to end the threat.
The Monarchs are 23-5.
