Seminar to Address Assessment Appeals

Los Angeles County will sponsor a free seminar Wednesday for Valley residents who believe their taxes should be lowered due to a decline in the value of their property.
Zev Yaroslavsky, chairman and Valley representative of the Board of Supervisors, said the board scheduled the seminar--along with five others countywide--in response to the filing of more than 100,000 assessment appeals in fiscal 1996-97. Many residents are confused by the assessment appeals process, he said.
The seminar will cover the rights of those who appeal, how to prepare for a hearing, what qualifies as admissible evidence and what occurs during and after the hearing.
Six 90-minute sessions were set for five sites. The series began in April and will continue through May. Other meetings will be scheduled on a year-round basis, Yaroslavsky said.
The Valley seminar will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Senior Citizens Recreation Center, 5056 Van Nuys Blvd.
