University Reinstates Honor Society Chapter

Cal State Northridge has reinstated an honor society aimed at encouraging freshmen to keep up the good work.

The university initiated 68 freshmen to the new class of Phi Eta Sigma at a recent ceremony.

To earn a spot in the national honor society, a freshman must earn a 3.5 grade-point average in his or her first semester and attend CSUN full time. After induction, the student must maintain the same grade-point average to remain a member, said Fred Strache, the group’s advisor at CSUN.

“It brings together an outstanding group of students,” he said.

Freshmen usually stay active in the group during their sophomore year and join an upper division academic honor society in their junior or senior years, Strache said.

School officials are hoping this group of Phi Eta Sigma members will last longer than the last chapter.

Students organized a chapter at CSUN in 1966, but it was disbanded a year later.

Phi Eta Sigma exists at more than 300 college campuses nationwide, Strache said.
