Student Quilts to Go to HIV, AIDS Babies

Orange County babies affected by HIV or AIDS soon will be snuggling with new colorful quilts made by eighth-grade students at Fred Newhart Middle School.
Students from Judy Henry’s Teen Living classes have stitched together 20 crib-size quilts during the past several months.
The patchwork pieces of art will be on display at the school during open house today and then donated later in the month to Baby Buddies Kid’s Connection Inc., a nonprofit organization that addresses the basic needs of children and their families affected by HIV or AIDS.
Henry said she decided to create the quilting assignment because she wanted her students to learn new skills and to give something back to the community. Much of the fabric, flannel, thread, ribbon and other materials needed to make the quilts were donated by students, their friends or relatives, she said.
“It’s been a very successful project,” Henry said. “I was surprised. . . . It created some real positive attitudes.”
