Education Mall Plans Opening

The grand opening of the county’s first self-styled Education Mall will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Several businesses formed a cooperative to create the Education Mall at 230 E. 17th St. The new community involvement center will offer classes, seminars and workshops for children and adults on topics including self-defense, yoga, creative writing, environmental awareness, Internet skills, spiritual awareness, nutrition and music.
The center also will have a summer program for children.
“We’re taking young people and raising them with a support and mentorship that’s been missing,” said Douglas Bader, a filmmaker and founder of the Hub, one of the cooperative’s members. “We’re deliberately trying to get kids off the street during the summer and give them a place to go.”
The grand opening will feature free self-defense and yoga demonstrations, drawings for prizes and free smoothies. Speakers and class instructors will be on hand to answer questions. Parking is available to the rear of the building, formerly the Jewelry Mart.
