SAN DIEGO — A U.S. Border Patrol agent, on routine patrol in a desolate region west of the San Ysidro border crossing, was wounded early Saturday by gunfire from a car along the Ensenada Freeway in Mexico, officials said.
The agent, a three-year veteran whose name was not released, was hit in the shoulder and grazed in the forehead. He was taken to the UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was listed in stable and guarded condition. His injuries were not considered life threatening.
The agent was in a marked Border Patrol van about 3 a.m. when his vehicle was pelted by six to 10 shots fired from south of the border fence. Two shots struck the windshield. The shooting is being investigated by Mexican authorities, the San Diego Police Department and the FBI.
Wayne Preston, a spokesman for the Border Patrol, said no motive for the shooting has been established.
“We’re not sure it wasn’t just a random act of violence,” Preston said.
