Facility for Homeless Families Opens in Santa Monica

The first transitional housing facility in Santa Monica designed for families opened Thursday--11 years after it was conceived by local church leaders.
Family Place, a 22-unit project, will provide apartments for homeless adults with children until they can get back on their feet, said Cathie Gandel, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit community service organization Upward Bound House.
Upward Bound House is an offshoot of the First United Methodist Church of Santa Monica, which donated its parking lot for the transitional housing.
“It truly was a community effort,” Gandel said, noting that in addition to funds from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, the city of Santa Monica and the state, hundreds of local businesses and private donors contributed to the $2.4-million project.
The project will provide on-site case management services and will be expanded to include 70 units of senior housing, Upward Bound House officials said.
Church leaders dubbed the two-story complex in the 1000 block of 12th Street, “The Miracle on 12th Street.”
