College to Move Expanded Satellite Facility to South Gate

East Los Angeles College is moving into South Gate after enrollment skyrocketed at a 3-year-old satellite campus in Huntington Park.

Classes are scheduled to begin in August at the 50,000-square-foot building under construction at Firestone Boulevard and Calden Avenue. In addition to academic classes, vocational training in computers and law enforcement and other courses will be offered.

School officials say they will close the 15,000-square-foot Southeast Educational Center in neighboring Huntington Park because it is too small--and parking too limited--to accommodate its current enrollment of more than 1,600 students.

“Nobody anticipated that we would grow as fast as we did,” said college Provost Daniel Castro, adding that enrollment at the nine-classroom campus was expected to be about 400 when it opened three years ago. “We are just jampacked.”

Plans for the new facility call for 25 classrooms, plus computer labs, a student center and a faculty lounge.
