An Oxnard man who tried to save his drowning cousin during a beach outing has improved and was in serious condition at an Oxnard hospital Tuesday evening, hospital officials said.
Alex Talili, 35, was airlifted to St. John’s Regional Medical Center on Monday afternoon after he nearly drowned while trying to save his cousin, 44-year-old Hansen Paialii, also of Oxnard.
The men were attending a family picnic at Yung Hee Beach, south of Mugu Rock. Paialii went swimming and got caught in a riptide, witnesses said. Talili swam out and tried to help his cousin, but was caught in the same riptide.
Family members and other rescuers pulled both men into shore. Paialii was pronounced dead at St. John’s Regional Medical Center.
