CSUN Ranked No. 1 by Science Foundation

The National Science Foundation has ranked Cal State Northridge first, ahead of 529 other public and private colleges and universities, in turning out undergraduates who went on to complete doctoral degrees in science and engineering, the school announced.

According to the report released last week, 182 CSUN graduates earned doctorates in science and engineering from 1991 to 1995. Two other local Cal State campuses were included in the report, second-ranked Long Beach and Fullerton, which ranked fourth.

“The report by the National Science Foundation confirms what we know on campus,” CSUN President Blenda J. Wilson said. “Cal State Northridge has superior undergraduate programs in science, computer science and engineering.”

“In virtually every major high-tech and aerospace company,” she added, “you will find CSUN graduates in positions of leadership and management.”

The foundation divided public and private institutions of higher education by several categories, including research universities, doctoral universities and baccalaureate colleges, CSUN officials said.

CSUN was classified as a “master’s university,” defined as offering a full range of baccalaureate programs and graduate education through the master’s level.
