Re “The British Knew in 1941 of Jews Dying,” May 20: Of course the British government knew, just as President Roosevelt’s government and the rest of the free world’s governments knew. What were we supposed to do?

Well, the British were certainly busy at the time, not only fighting for our lives on our little island but struggling against Germany for our very existence as a nation.

Thank God we had Churchill to lead us in those very dark days, because if Germany had succeeded in its plans to conquer Britain as it had the rest of Europe, then it is my firm belief that tragically it would have meant the complete extinction of European Jews.
