RICHARD LEWIS / COMIC-ACTOR

Richard Lewis--raised in New York but an L.A. resident for more than 20 years--is best-known as a comic, playing off his own neuroses. In the fall, he’ll co-star with Kevin Nealon and Eugene Levy in the ABC sitcom “Hiller and Diller.” But at 49 he’s also serious about being serious, starring impressively in the 12-step examination “Drunks” and the upcoming “Hugo Pool” and “Game Day.”
GOING OUT: “I get invitations in L.A. for parties 3 1/2 years in advance. They come with maps, aerial views, reconnaissance flight info, almost hologram-like directions. I went to a Passover Seder, a great one, was invited a year ago, and the map folded out, almost half the size of my kitchen. It was like Moses in the desert.”
EATING IN: “There’s a wonderful service called Why Cook? They basically, within 40 minutes, bring some of the best food from just about any place. I don’t think I’ve left my house since I found them. That’s my favorite restaurant in L.A.”
READING MATTER: “I want to reread ‘Something Happened’ by Joseph Heller. Took him 11 years to write--the quintessential book on paranoia. I underline things in books, and I underlined this entire book.”
PARANOIA STRIKES DEEP: “I have an old house in the Hollywood Hills, and I needed to be able to see all my ex-girlfriends’ houses and all the doctors I go to and every agent I ever fired, from my second-floor toilet. Took the real estate agent a month and a half to locate this particular toilet.”
DATING GAME: “There’s no way I can see myself with an actress, and I say this respectfully. But the drive and narcissism and not being available for other people’s feelings--like when there’s an accident and you need her blood type and she says, ‘I can be there after 4, but I’m meeting Scorsese at 1.’ Not sure that’s what I want.”
ROCKIN’ OUT: “The great place for rock ‘n’ roll is the Whiskey Bar [at the Sunset Marquis]. I try to find my corner table and just sit. I like to find--in every city I go to--two or three bars where I can sit in the corner, listen to music and drink my 3 million Diet Cokes.”
TRIPLE FEATURE: “With a date, put on ‘Taxi Driver,’ ‘Straw Dogs’ and then try to make love. That’s my sexual test for myself. Close the show with ‘Clockwork Orange,’ and see how good I am in bed. Of course, after those films I’m usually by myself.”
