Hicks’ Seventh-Place Finish Makes Her All-American

Freshman Cheree Hicks of Cal State Northridge placed seventh in the women’s discus in the NCAA track and field championships in Bloomington, Ind., on Wednesday to earn All-American honors.

Hicks, the Northridge record holder at 180 feet 2 inches, threw 175-4 to become the first Matador freshman to earn All-American honors since Northridge moved to the Division I level in the fall of 1990.

She also became the third Matador thrower to earn All-American honors in the NCAA outdoor championships by finishing among the top eight competitors who are United States citizens.

Another chance: Carrera-Thompson III?

Welterweight Fausto Carrera, 18, a senior at Birmingham High, would like another shot at Vance Thompson after their four-round welterweight fight Saturday night at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas ended with the same result as their first bout in April: a draw.

“It was a good fight,” said Carrera, 0-1-2 since turning pro in February. “He had a good right hand and he was moving OK. I have to punch harder. I’d like to fight him again, maybe six rounds.”

Former World Boxing Assn. heavyweight champion Gerrie Coetzee, a former fight promoter at Warner Center Marriott, will fight Iran Barkley in a 10-round main event Sunday night at the Hollywood Palladium. The undercard will include former World Boxing Council welterweight champion Carlos Palomino, a resident of Sherman Oaks, in a 10-round bout against Rene Arredondo.

Spartans split: The La Canada water polo youth program competed, with mixed results, in the Villa Park 18-and-under summer tournament last weekend.

The Spartans won, 11-8, over El Toro, which was ranked fourth in the CIF-Southern Section Division I last year, and topped La Jolla, 10-5, to avenge a 6-5 loss in last year’s tournament.
