Leaving the Area
On June 14, the San Gabriel Valley leaves the 818 area code for the 626. Burbank and Glendale originally were to be designated 626 but successfully fought to remain with San Fernando Valley communities in the 818. During a break-in period that runs until February, calls to 626 numbers will go through even if dialed with the 818 code. California got its first three area codes in 1947, and the 626 will be its 14th. The number of area codes is expected to jump to 26 in the next five years.
