French Soldier Killed in Firefight in Capital

A French soldier was killed and five others were wounded in a firefight involving French and Congolese soldiers, the French Defense Ministry said. The ministry in Paris said the soldier was shot to death after a third day of bloodshed and confusion in Brazzaville, the capital of the former French colony. Earlier, 44 U.S. citizens flew out of Brazzaville for Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. A showdown pitting militiamen against troops loyal to President Pascal Lissouba and rival militias began Thursday after the government ordered a crackdown on private militias.
