Bank Foils Scam Targeting Elderly Woman
Bank officials helped an elderly woman avoid becoming the victim Thursday of what Ventura police describe as the classic bank examiner fraud scheme.
In this incarnation of the well-known scam, a man phoned the woman at her home Thursday afternoon, said he was an employee of her bank and told her another bank employee may have been making unauthorized withdrawals from her bank account.
He requested she withdraw $3,800 in $100 bills from her account and meet him at a local shopping center.
The woman, whom police did not identify, went to her bank and explained what was going on to a teller and the bank manager.
The bank employees called police, who staked out the arranged meeting location, but the unsuccessful con artist failed to show up.
Police wanted to warn the public that banks do not conduct internal theft investigations in such a manner.
