MINING THE QUARRY: Angelenos wishing to experience the Quarry Men reunion can at least eavesdrop a bit. On July 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Lewis, who grew up near London in the heyday of Beatlemania, will debut a new radio program called “UnBeatleable” on all-Beatles station KGIL-AM (1260) with a special celebrating the anniversary of John’s meeting Paul.

Included will be interviews Lewis taped at the Quarry Men’s first reunion rehearsal earlier this month and an irreverent audio tour around the church fete grounds and other Beatles sites in Liverpool. And at 10:48 (6:48 p.m. Liverpool time, which is when it is believed John and Paul actually met), Lewis will chat with the Quarry Men live by phone.

The series will carry on weekly on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon in a loose, humor-filled style that Lewis says is inspired by British radio personality Kenny Everett, whom the Beatles often identified as their favorite deejay. The show will mix Beatles rarities and related recordings with tidbits both historical and trivial, and Lewis--who produced the “Secret Policeman’s Ball” Amnesty International benefits with Monty Python’s Flying Circus--plans to have celebrity Beatlemaniac guests, including “Politically Incorrect’s” Bill Maher.
