NFL Kicks Off Its Regular Season, Ready or Not

Football widows and armchair quarterbacks take note: The NFL season is officially upon us this weekend. Are you ready for a rumble?

Vince Cellini, former players Keith Jackson and Sean Jones host “Pro Football Tonight,” Saturday at 5 p.m. on TNT, a two-hour preview of the NFL season.

Game action begins Sunday at 10 a.m. with two games: The Oakland Raiders battle the Tennessee Oilers on NBC (Channel 4), while the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers square off on Fox (Channel 11).

Then the Kansas City Chiefs take on their archrivals, the Denver Broncos, at 1 p.m. on Channel 4. And TNT presents the Washington Redskins versus the Carolina Panthers at 5 p.m.

In “Roam Sweet Home,” at 8 p.m. on KCET-TV Channel 28, filmmaker Ellen Spiro and her dog go searching for “Geritol gypsies”--senior citizens who chose to retire on the road.

Folklorist Charlie Chin narrates “Chinatown,” 9 p.m. on KLCS-TV Channel 58 and 10 p.m. on Channel 28, a PBS documentary chronicling the 150-year history of San Francisco’s Asian community.

Friday

George C. Scott narrates the History Channel’s “The Indomitable Teddy Roosevelt,” a documentary about the larger-than-life president, intellectual, war hero and conservationist, at 6 and 10 p.m.

“Dealing With the Demon,” at 9 p.m. on KCET-TV Channel 28, is a three-hour documentary investigation of international drug laws, drug abuse and various drug-related crimes.

Saturday

VH1’s “Best of Hard Rock Live: The Women,” at 5 p.m. and 1 a.m., features performances from Chaka Khan (“I’m Every Woman”), Paula Cole (“Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?”), Shawn Colvin (“Sunny Came Home”) and Jewel (“You Were Meant for Me”).

Malik Yoba of “New York Undercover” and “Cop Land” hosts ABC’s “The Power of One,” at 9 p.m. on Channel 7. The one-hour special spotlights ordinary folks who are fighting against teen violence and drug abuse.

Sunday

Kathleen Turner hosts “Love in the Ancient World,” at 5 and 9 p.m. on A&E.; The special looks at the meaning of amour and erotica in the distant past.

“The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon,” at 6 p.m. on KCAL-TV Channel 9, returns for its 32nd year. The two-day fund-raiser will originate from Hollywood’s CBS Television City. Lewis will be assisted by co-hosts Jerry Springer, Jann Carl and Norm Crosby. Ed McMahon is back as anchor. The telethon continues through 5 p.m. Monday.

“Recess,” a new animated series from Disney, gets a special prime-time preview at 7:30 p.m. on ABC (Channel 7). The series moves into its regular Saturday morning slot on Sept. 6.

E! Entertainment Television presents “Death in Malibu: The Murder of Music Mogul Charlie Minor--The E! True Hollywood Story,” at 8 p.m., about a record promoter who was gunned down in 1995.

In the documentary “Philip Johnson: Diary of an Eccentric Architect,” at 9 p.m. on Channel 28, the 90-year-old architect offers a tour of his estate in New Canaan, Conn.
