Fluor Is Tops Even in Off Year

Fluor Corp. disappointed analysts, investors and its own top executives with its performance in 1996 and early this year. The company posted a huge second-quarter loss after acknowledging that in its focus on expansion it had let internal controls slip and had incurred $120 million in cost overruns on several major projects.
But even at that, the Irvine-based construction and engineering services firm’s main operating unit, Fluor Daniel Inc. has been listed for the fourth consecutive year by Engineering News-Record magazine as the nation’s biggest engineering and construction company, based on total revenue. The company also was rated tops among 400 general contractors for total new business during the year and for total overseas revenue.
