Community Designated as a Bird Sanctuary

Birds of a feather can now flock together to Dana Point for safety under a decision by the City Council designating the community as a bird sanctuary.

The ordinance, initiated by Councilwoman Toni Gallagher, protects the diverse assortment of wild migratory and coastal birds found in the city’s coastal habitats. It makes it a misdemeanor to trap, injure, shoot, handle or kill wild birds in Dana Point, with the exception of pigeons, European starlings and house sparrows.

“It’ll be added protection to the birds that are in the Dana Point area,” City Manager John B. Bahorski said.

In other action Tuesday, the five-member council said it wants a community workshop to consider whether speed bumps are needed on Timothy Drive. Many residents who live on or near the street urged the council to help them prevent speeding in the neighborhood.

“I’m just a kid who doesn’t want to get squished,” 10-year-old Matthew Gribble told the council.
