Supermarket Mergers

Re “Ralphs’ Takeover Plan Is Distasteful to Studio City Group,” Dec. 10.
When I founded Gelson’s Markets with my brother Eugene almost 50 years ago, our desire was to offer value: the highest quality meats and produce available, the greatest variety of grocery products and the absolute best service at a fair price. The offhand dismissal of Gelson’s as simply “more expensive” does not accurately portray a supermarket that is spotlessly clean at all times, that is fully staffed with courteous and knowledgeable employees and that offers an unconditional guarantee on every item purchased.
I have observed the many changes that have taken place in the supermarket landscape over the years, not all of which have benefited the consumer. I agree that this latest proposed merger will further erode supermarket competition. Ralphs’ greater buying power will not necessarily translate into lower prices or greater variety for the consumer.
