City to Join Program on Regulating Taxis
The City Council this week unanimously voted to join 22 other cities in the Orange County Taxi Administration Program, a voluntary regulatory group.
The program, which goes into effect Jan. 2, tries to streamline permit applications and better monitor taxis, said project manager Sabrina Schaffer.
Currently, cab drivers must get permits and vehicle inspections in each of the cities they serve. In many cases neither is done.
Under the program, only taxis approved by the group will operate in participating cities.
The approval process will include background and insurance reviews and periodic vehicle inspections.
La Palma, like other cities, will be responsible for enforcing licensing requirements and prosecuting violators.
The program also has established a flat rate of $1.90 for the first one-sixth of a mile and a 30-cent charge for each additional mile.
