Giants’ Beck Blows Save, Wins Game

SEATTLE — Best in the West?

For a night, it was San Francisco, which got a run-scoring single from Glenallen Hill and a sacrifice fly from Mark Lewis in the top of the 10th inning, then used three relievers to make an 8-6 decision stand Monday in Seattle.

In their first visit to the Kingdome, the Giants, leaders of the NL West, had a 6-5 lead with two outs in the ninth inning. But Edgar Martinez delivered a run-scoring single against Rod Beck to send the game into extra innings.

In the 10th, Kent drew a one-out walk from Norm Charlton (2-5) and J.T. Snow followed with a single. Hill, who broke a 5-5 tie with an RBI single in the eighth inning, singled to right for the game-winning hit. Lewis followed with a sacrifice fly as Beck (4-2) got the win after blowing his third save--first since May 14--in 29 opportunities.

Doug Henry got the final two outs for his second save.

The Mariners, leaders of the AL West, tied it, 6-6, in the ninth when Joey Cora led off with a single. After Alex Rodriguez hit into a fielder’s choice, he went to second on a wild pitch. Beck struck out Ken Griffey Jr., but Martinez followed with a single to score Rodriguez. Martinez, who was four for four with three RBIs, was thrown out at second by catcher Damon Berryhill after a throw home by Bonds.

Kent, Snow and Lewis homered for the Giants, now 6-1 in interleague play and 3-0 against Seattle. Rodriguez, Martinez and Paul Sorrento hit home runs for the Mariners, now 4-3 in interleague play.
