Naples Island Canals to Be Closed to Nonresidents’ Boats

The canals of Naples Island will be closed Friday to nonresident boating traffic in response to holiday safety concerns, the Long Beach Police Department said Tuesday.
Representatives of the Naples Improvement Assn. requested the unprecedented canal closure as a way to limit the number of boats mingling with revelers on inner tubes and other flotation devices, police public information officer Karen Kerr said.
“It’s not a good combination [to] have motorized boats going through the canals when you have swimmers in the water,” she said.
Shoreline Aquatic Park will also be closed for the first time because of construction on the Queensway Bay project, Kerr said.
