Kudos for Showcasing a Trail That’s Off the Beaten Path

I so enjoyed Kathy Stickel’s article “Stone-Faced and Awed” (July 26). This adventure is far from a leisurely Sunday outing, rolling down a freeway in a comfortable vehicle complete with air-conditioning, heaters and stereo music filling the air, even, perhaps, a TV plugged into the lighter. The convenience of windshield wipers, sunroofs to open up the sky and an occasional U-turn on a dime. These are much braver souls than we who are so entrenched in all our luxury.

They endure heat, cold, dust, wind, insects and other critters, not to mention the trudging and bouncing, jiggling and jostling hour after hour, day after day. Their adventurous natures are to be admired. In a world of rush here, rush there, they are taking the time to stop and smell the roses. We all get out there on the highway and whiz by, never noticing all that those who came before us viewed for the very first time . . . in awe.
