Slayings Emphasize Other Tragic Losses

Times staff writer Mack Reed wrote on June 28 that Miguel Hugo Garcia shot and killed Albert Alexander and his daughter, Helen Giardina, in Upper Ojai because animals barking outside prompted him to believe that he heard the sounds of a thundering train and something growling inside the house.
Garcia told his lawyer he then grabbed a pistol he was carrying and backed into a corner. When Helen Giardina tried to take the pistol from Garcia, he saw the face of the demon and shot her to death.
Garcia then reported he saw the face of the devil and a forked tail behind Albert Alexander, Helen Giardina’s father. Garcia then shot Alexander, thinking he was killing the devil.
And Gov. Pete Wilson closed Camarillo State Hospital and the Supreme Court struck down the Brady Bill.
