German Cruise Ship to Ply Great Lakes

It’s billed as the only luxury liner of international caliber now plying the Great Lakes (freighters also work the lakes)--and ironically, it’s being marketed mostly abroad, to Germans.
The Columbus is a 420-passenger cruise ship with pool, sauna, restaurant and lounge, built in Germany and operated by a German company, Hapag-Lloyd. The crew speaks both English and German, a spokeswoman said.
The ship’s maiden nine- and 10-day lakes voyages, on Sept. 17 and 29, are sold out--to Germans. But an overnight trip Oct. 11 to 12 on Lake Erie--from Port Colborne, Canada, to Toledo, Ohio--is being marketed to North Americans. Prices range from $205 to $305 per person, double occupancy.
