‘Old Ironsides’ Leaves Berth; It Sails Today

The Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship afloat, set its sails and briefly tasted the winds as it left its berth at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston under tow by tugboats for the trip to Marblehead Harbor, about 20 miles away. Something of an armada, including modern Navy ships and numerous pleasure boats, floated with the 200-year-old frigate, which won the nickname “Old Ironsides” during the War of 1812. The ship is to sail under its own power today--the first time in 116 years--in Massachusetts Bay.
