$4.6-Million Sewer Pipe Repair Program to Begin

The city will begin a five-year, $4.6-million sewer pipe repair program in December, funded by federal, state and city governments.
About 75% of the city’s sewer pipes were damaged in the Northridge quake, said construction manager Jason Fell. Because of the resulting cracks and misalignments, the potential for backup and overflow is much greater.
The first phase, to be completed in June, includes strengthening of 60,000 feet of pipes, mostly in downtown. Plastic liners will be inserted into pipes. Steam will then be pumped in, expanding the liner to fit the host pipe. Afterward, a camera will be slid through the pipe to check on the work.
Although the pipes will be slightly narrower, they will be able to carry more outflow because of improved hydrology and reduced friction, he said.
