Senator in Governor’s Race

WASHINGTON — Idaho Republican Sen. Dirk Kempthorne announced Wednesday that he will step down after one term and run for governor of his state. Kempthorne, a staunch conservative in a heavily Republican state, will seek to succeed Phil Batt, a fellow Republican who is not running again. Kempthorne managed Batt’s campaign when he became governor in 1982.
