Newport Corp.: The Irvine manufacturer of components, instruments and integrated systems for the fiber optic communications, semiconductor equipment, computer peripherals and scientific research markets said net income for the third quarter rose 64% to $1.8 million, or 19 cents a share, from $1.1 million, or 12 cents a share, a year ago. Sales increased 12% to $32.7 million from $29.2 million. For the nine months, net income advanced 50% to $4.5 million, or 49 cents a share, from $3 million, or 34 cents a share, a year ago. Sales were up 10% to $95.6 million from $87.3 million.
