Heritage Christian failed in its bid to give Coach Tom Caffrey his 200th career victory, losing, 28-16, to Riverside Bethel Christian in a Victory League game Saturday at Cerritos Valley Christian.
The Patriots lost five fumbles, three of them leading to Bethel Christian touchdowns, the last coming with less than three minutes remaining in the game. Caffrey entered the game with a career record of 199-85 in 37 years of coaching, including 18 at Whittier Christian.
Heritage Christian running back Paul Caffrey was held to 109 yards and two touchdowns in 20 carries. He was injured on his second touchdown run, of nine yards, with about five minutes left in the third quarter. The deep shin bruise appeared to bother him the rest of the game.
Last week, Caffrey rushed for 422 yards against Sherman Oaks Buckley, setting the county’s single-game rushing record.
Bethel Christian took the lead on Cliff Parks’ second of three rushing touchdowns.
After Caffrey’s nine-yard score gave Heritage Christian a 16-14 lead, Bethel Christian took advantage of a failed Heritage Christian onside kickoff attempt and an unsportsmanlike penalty to set up the winning touchdown. Parks ran for a 39-yard touchdown and a 20-16 lead.
