In a nod to his rising prominence on Capitol Hill, Rep. Christopher Cox (R-Newport Beach) has been selected to lead a congressional delegation to Calcutta this weekend for Mother Teresa’s funeral.
Joining him on the trip to India will be Republican Rep. Sam Brownback of Kansas and five other House members, including three Democrats.
For the funeral, the Clinton administration will send a separate delegation, headed by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, officials said. The first lady also attended the memorial services for Princess Diana in London last week.
Cox’s group is scheduled to leave Andrews Air Force base at 7 p.m. today and land in Calcutta about 2 a.m. Saturday. The funeral for Mother Teresa, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning nun who spent her life helping the poor, is set to start at 10 a.m. Saturday. She died last week at age 87.
