Hart Uses Balance to Win, 33-0

GRANADA HILLS — Despite returning no offensive starters, Hart High rolled up 466 yards in shutting out Granada Hills, 33-0, Friday night in an intersectional game at Granada Hills.

Quarterback David Neill completed 12 of 28 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Both scores went to wide receiver Jerry Owens, covering 11 and 33 yards.

Neill also threw three interceptions.

“I was a little nervous and should have played better,” said Neill, a senior who was making his first start at quarterback. “I threw two interceptions on first-down passes.

“But it shows how great our team is that we were able to gain so many yards.”

Defensive end John Harrison led the Hart defense with two sacks. Harrison, a senior who also played running back in short-yardage situations, scored touchdowns on runs of two and three yards as Hart built a 13-0 first-quarter lead.

Billy Brecht, a junior tailback, added 130 yards in 13 carries for Hart and two catches for 45 yards.

Granada Hills was never able to gets its passing game untracked.

Quarterback Ricky Mathiesen completed only five of 28 passes for 65 yards with one interception.

The Highlanders had 193 offensive yards, including 128 on the ground.

Leon Pimky, the Highlanders’ top player, caught three passes for 44 yards and had two interceptions.

Granada Hills ran the ball effectively at times. Juante Carter rushed for 47 yards in six carries and Jausten Thompson added 41 yards in nine carries.

The Highlanders had 10 penalties for 90 yards.

Backup quarterback Kyler Boller connected with John Lyons on an eight-yard touchdown pass to give Hart a 26-0 halftime lead.
