Death Reportedly Sought for U.S. Man

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for a U.S. citizen held in Cuba since August 1996 on charges of working for a “terrorist” group in Miami, diplomatic sources said. In March, state TV said that 51-year-old Walter Van der Veer had smuggled military equipment into Cuba and was being financed and directed by a Miami-based Cuban exile group.
