WASHINGTON — Former Energy Secretary Hazel O’Leary said Thursday that the Justice Department has decided to launch a preliminary investigation into allegations by Democratic donor Johnny Chien Chuen Chung that O’Leary met a Chinese executive after Chung contributed to her favorite charity.
O’Leary said the department informed her of its decision, which could eventually lead to appointment of an independent counsel, on Thursday evening and she pledged to continue cooperating extensively with federal investigators.
But she again denied the allegations and she said expected the investigation to vindicate her of any wrongdoing.
The Justice Department had no comment.
