WHITTIER — Adam Provence scored two touchdowns and had an interception as La Habra overcame sloppy special teams play to defeat Whittier California, 20-6, Friday night at California High School.
The Highlanders (2-1) turned the ball over four times, including twice by the special teams, but came away unscathed as the Condors (0-3) committed three turnovers. Eric Ojeda led California with 96 yards rushing and a touchdown.
La Habra opened the scoring, capping a seven-play, 41-yard drive on Provence’s six-yard run. The drive was set up when Josh White intercepted Bryce Woolridge’s pass less than three minutes into the quarter.
The Condors responded when Ojeda scored on a 26-yard run down the sideline, but the two-point conversion failed when Woolridge was tackled on the two-yard line.
But the Highlanders put the game out of reach with 13 points in the second half, getting a six-yard scoring run from Josh Herrera and a 29-yard pass from quarterback Robert Morales to Provence early in the fourth quarter.
California tried to come back with 6:14 remaining in the game, but after consecutive false-start penalties, the Condors turned the ball over on downs and La Habra ran out the final five minutes.
