OXNARD — A fire apparently ignited by an unattended candle caused $15,000 in damage to an Oxnard home Thursday night, and sent one resident to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, authorities said.
The fire broke out at 7:22 p.m. at a single-story home at 1419 W. Hemlock St., said Clarence Slayton, Oxnard Fire Department battalion chief. A crew of 15 firefighters contained the blaze in 20 minutes, he said.
Joyce Burgess, who was home with her teenage daughter and 1-year-old granddaughter when the fire started, was taken by ambulance to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard for treatment. She was expected to be released late Thursday, Slayton said.
Slayton said the cause of the fire was under investigation but that initial reports indicate it started with a burning candle in a bathroom. Flames spread to one of the home’s three bedrooms, he said.
Burgess’ daughter and granddaughter were staying with relatives Thursday night.
