Rebels Free Inmates in Raid on Prison

Leftist rebels blew up the walls of a prison in Cauca province, rescuing one of their jailed leaders and freeing another 53 inmates. Officials at the National Prisons Institute said two convicts were killed and another was injured in the blast in the town of Santander de Quilichao in the southwest part of the country. About 20 Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia guerrillas overpowered nine prison guards and seized their weapons in the attack. A prison spokesman said seven escapees were recaptured.
