Fugitive Sought in Telemarketer Case

A fugitive Los Angeles telemarketer who allegedly capitalized on anti-Bill and Hillary Clinton sentiment to steal thousands of dollars from unwitting credit card holders was indicted Tuesday, authorities said.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Daniel Sonners, 39, who is named in a four-count federal indictment. Sonners allegedly called people and offered them such items as “Slick Willie” watches, “Clintonic” water, “$3 bills” featuring the president’s face, “deficit blues” cassettes and T-shirts,” said Assistant U.S. Atty. David Lavine.

When buyers called a toll-free number to order the items and gave Sonners their credit card numbers, he took their money but never delivered the goods, Lavine said. About 100 customers lost a total of $49,000 in late 1993, the prosecutor said.
