Zito Delivers 12 Strikeouts for Pierce

Pierce College’s Barry Zito struck out 12 and walked five in 7 2/3 innings to defeat host Canyons, 16-3, in a Western State Conference South Division game Tuesday.
The left-hander held the Cougars (18-12, 9-8 in division play) hitless for five innings and scoreless through the seventh, yielding two runs in the eighth before departing.
Pierce’s designated hitter Jared Hertz had five hits, including a three-run home run, and drove in four runs. Right fielder Seth Barkley scored three runs and had two hits, including a three-run home run during a five-run first inning.
Canyons’ catcher Jesse Daggett hit his 10th home run.
Pierce is now 16-12, 9-7.
Oxnard 5, Santa Barbara 0--Oxnard’s Joe Isaacson pitched a four-hitter, striking out four and walking one in a WSC North Division game at Oxnard.
Jack Wilson and Matt Pesso each had two hits and two runs batted in for Oxnard (20-7).
Hancock 11, Ventura 9--Brian Riley had two hits and scored three runs, and Manny Mosqueda had two hits and two RBIs for host Ventura (9-16, 3-12)in a WSC North Division game.
Ventura used seven pitchers, but couldn’t stop Nick Terrenos, who had two doubles and six RBIs. Hancock improved to 16-11, 7-7
Glendale 4, Valley 3--Brian Eggleston hit the first pitch of the 10th inning for a home run off reliever Mark Leonard to lift host Glendale (21-10, 12-5) in a WSC South Division game.
Wes Hutchison pitched the first nine innings for Glendale, striking out 10, allowing four hits and walking two.
Loyola Marymount 12, USC 6--Former Chaminade High pitcher Chris Gray allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings to earn the victory and former Westlake outfielder Matt Riordan had three hits and three RBIs to pace the host Lions (21-16-1) in a nonconference game.
The Master’s 17, La Verne 5--Ruben Escobar (9-1) tied the Mustang school record for season victories, allowing one run on four hits in five innings in a nonconference game at Master’s.
Escobar struck out two and walked one.
Master’s (26-7) scored nine runs in the first inning.
Rob Avila, Aaron Penberthy and Jason Freeman hit home runs for the Mustangs.
SOFTBALL
Canyons 13, Santa Monica 4--Andrea Wintermute hit two home runs and Lupe Flores and Kristy Frye each drove in three runs for Canyons (10-11, 6-3) in a WSC game in Santa Monica.
Pierce 7, Valley 2--Marcia Gonzalez (2-2) pitched a three-hitter for Pierce, striking out 11 and walking three in a WSC game at Valley.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UC Santa Barbara d. Cal State Northridge, 15-7, 15-13, 13-15, 17-16--Chad Strickland had 31 kills for Northridge (9-14, 6-13) in its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation season finale at Santa Barbara (10-12, 8-11).
