Attack on Cardinal Spurs Riot by Croats

About 1,500 Bosnian Croats rioted to retaliate for a Serbian attack on a Croatian Roman Catholic cardinal, setting buildings ablaze and overturning U.N vehicles in northwestern Bosnia. The latest outpouring of ethnic hostilities in the troubled town of Drvar left 19 people injured, including four U.N. officers and the Serbian mayor, Western officials said. The office of the U.N. refugee agency, which is overseeing the return of Serbs to the Croat-dominated town, was burned to the ground, said an agency spokesman in Geneva. The crowd also attacked, stoned and set ablaze the headquarters of U.N. police monitors and several other buildings. The NATO-led peace force evacuated aid workers and put more troops and helicopters on standby as a precaution against further rioting.
