Re “Despite Prosecutor Threats, Susan McDougal Won’t Talk,” April 24: Watching Susan McDougal shuffle her feet, attempting to maintain her balance, her legs shackled on a short chain tether leading to another chain attached to her waist, her hands handcuffed, with another chain leading to a chain on her waist, one wonders, what did this woman do? Did she kill her children? Is she some kind of a serial killer? After 18 months in prison for not speaking or testifying [before the Whitewater grand jury], most of us probably do not remember why this woman is in prison.
The prosecutor who has kept McDougal in prison for the last 18 months should have to do an equal amount of time--we used to criticize the Soviets for similar human rights violations.

* So much hoopla over the release of a Chinese political prisoner (Wang Dan); not even a whimper over the incarceration of an American political prisoner (Susan McDougal).
